This is a box I just recently finished.  It is a tin (like an Altoids tin) that has been covered in clay.  Clay clings well to the metal.  All kinds of embellishments can be added to the top -- or inside -- for interest.
A phrase has been added to the top. This is an epoxy piece with wording.  These pieces cannot be placed in the oven, so they are the finishing touch. The other side of the top features an image of two people...
This is a transfer image.  It was placed on the uncured/raw clay and a clay border was applied.  These can be covered with liquid clay prior to curing or simply clear coated. A resin or MagiGloss could also be applied here.
Ball feet were applied to the bottom -- be sure each has the same amount of clay or it will wobble!
A foam sheet has been cut and placed in the bottom of the inside of the tin for a finished look and protective surface for anything that might be placed or stored in the box.
This piece has been clear coated.

This is one I made a while back and gave to my mother. I covered the inside with clay as well.

This was my very first tin box...
